About Sankat Mochan Foundation - Clean Ganga Now in Tulsi Ghat, Varanasi, Varanasi

The Swatcha Ganga Abhiyan (Clean Ganges Campaign) is an initiative of the Sankat Mochan Foundation (SMF). Founded in 1982, the campaign is spearheaded by Dr Veer Bhadra Mishra, former Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at Banaras Hindu University and prominent spiritual leader (Mahant or High Priest of the Sankat Mochan Temple) in Varanasi. The Swatcha Ganga Abhiyan brings together science, education, technology, culture, tradition, people's participation and all levels of Government from local to the Government of India.

SMF has many key achievements, but that most pertinent today (in 2011) is relating to the researching and development of appropriate and cost-effective solutions for sewage collection and treatment in Varanasi. In June 2008, the SMF achieved a remarkable breakthrough when the GoI decided to support the Foundation's proposal for prevention of pollution in the River Ganga in Varanasi. The Government of India approved the SMF to construct a pilot plant to research and test new sewage technology at Ramana in south Varanasi. Once proven, this technology can be expanded in Varanasi and to other river cities in India.

The SMF is now meeting with the Government of India to finalise the project details and receive a final sanction to begin construction.
