About Integrated Animal Care Centre - IACC in Auroville, Vanur

Integrated Animal Care Centre (IACC) is Auroville's existing animal shelter, located on 2 acres of forested land in Auroville in Tamil Nadu, South India. It has nearly 70 resident dogs of all ages, colours, shapes and sizes; and each one with their unique special personality. All these animals are sterilised, vaccinated and dewormed and they are cared for on a daily basis by a dedicated veterinarian and a team of amazing workers and volunteers. Most of our dogs run free in one big, happy pack with a few unsocialized or weak animals in large enclosures for their own wellbeing. IACC is a no-kill shelter and we do not euthanise an animal unless it is very sick or suffering from old age. Veterinary care to the IACC animals is provided by our dedicated full-time veterinarian, Dr Gawdaman.

Since its inception in 2005, IACC has looked after countless stray, unwanted and abandoned animals in and around Auroville. Integrated Animal Care has organized (and in many cases, paid for) more than 2000 sterilizations of both male and female dogs, vaccinated countless animals against rabies, adopted hundreds of abandoned puppies and found homes for many of them in Auroville and the surrounding villages.
The aspect of widespread sensitisation and education of the general public has yet to be tackled as this requires a large amount of resources on all levels. We are hoping to generate more resources to approach this task through education in the local schools, organised visits to the shelter and other ways of spreading awareness of animal care and public health.

A large number of our resident dogs are from "puppy dumping" outside our gate or in other parts of Auroville. We have almost 70 resident animals, puppies who did not get adopted or dogs that cannot be rehomed (sick/aggressive/fearful), who will remain at the shelter where they will be cared for and fed for their lifetime. (See photos of all our residents….and you might enjoy to become a benefactor for one particularly adorable creature).
