Below are the people who initated the birth of this Institution

George Uglow Pope (1820–1908) popularly known as Rev. G.U. Pope or G.U. Pope was a Christian missionary who spent many years in Tamil Nadu and translated many Tamil texts into English. His popular translations include Tirukkural and Tiruvachagam. His efforts were recognized by the Royal Asiatic Society in the form of a gold medal. He was the head of the Bishop Cotton Boys' School, Bangalore before returning to Oxford.

George Uglow Pope was born on 24 April 1820 in Prince Edward Island in Nova Scotia. His family migrated to England when he was an infant. He left for South India in 1839 and arrived at Sawyerpuram near Tuticorin. Pope turned into a scholar of Tamil, Sanskrit and Telugu. He set up several schools and taught Latin, English, Hebrew, Mathematics and Philosophy.

Rt Rev Dr Robert Caldwell,DD,LLD (1814-91) of Glasgow, cotland. Born into a Presbyterian family at Clady, Belfast in Ulster.

Trained as an artist in Dublin 1830-33. University of Glasgow (Robert Peel prize) & Glasgow Theological College 1834-37. Ordained as Non-Conformist Minister, Glasgow 1837. LMS Missionary to India. Madras 1838-41. Transferred to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) 1841. 800 mile journey on foot to Tirunelveli. Idaiyangudi 1841-83. Missionary Chaplain to the Bishop of Madras (GJT Spencer) 1844-48. LLD (Glasgow) 1857. DD (Durham) 1874. Senior Fellow of the University of Madras. Consecrated (SPG) bishop, coadjutor of the Bishop of Madras, 1877. Tuticorin 1883. Died at Kodaikanal in the Palani Hills aged 77.
