About OllukkaraTemple in Ollukkara, Thrissur

The Ollukkara Temple complex is situated 5 km east of Thrissur, known as “Dakshina Kailas” being the abode of Lord Vadakkumnadhan, the personification of Lord Shiva. The Temple is situated prominently on the side of the Thrissur-Palakkad road. The deities of Lord Shiva in the form of Olluthrukkovilappan and Goddess Durga as Cherukulangara Devi adorn the complex. The presence of Lord Mahavishnu and Ganapathi also adds to the divinity of the place.

According to legend, Sree Poorumaharshi, on his way to Sree Kailas after consecrating the Peruvanam Shiva Temple, while reaching Ollukkara, felt an exalting presence of Lord Shiva at the place and decided to do penance in the form of ‘aachaarya tapas”. The place where the Maharshi sat in penance, called ‘Muniyara”, is seen near the pond in front of the temple even now. It is said that the temple was properly constructed as per ritualistic norms and the deity consecrated by the Namboothiri Illams of Kuttichira, Meppachi, Kumbalangode etc. of the Ollukkara desam.

The deity of Olluthrukkovilappan is in a pleasant posture after the holy marriage with Goddess Parvathi. The Lord and the Goddess adorn the temple, showering blessings and well-being upon the humans and all other living beings in the vicinity.

Mythologically, Lord Ayyappa is the offspring of Lord Shiva. Nettissery Sasthaavu is believed to visit the Ollukkara temple on his way back from the famous “Aaraattupuzha Pooram” to pay homage to Lord Shiva, his father. This holy event is conducted in a very spiritual and befitting manner even today. This is one of the early temples where the “vedas” were taught. The monthly “vaaram” is said to be the examination of the prowess of the students of veda.
