The traditional know-how of the Ovoor family at Kolani was later brought to Kanjiramattam in Thodupuzha by the late Kodampara Kesavan Nair Asaan who was a direct descendant of the Ovoor family and for many years was an abiding pole bearer of its rich heritage. Asaan was a specialist in combining marmma, yoga and ayurveda for effective treatment. He was very popular and much revered as he offered his services completely free of charge. Dr. Manoj, the Asaan’s nephew received his extensive career training under Kesavan Nair Asaan of Sree Ramakrishna Ayurveda Yogasramam, now being re-introduced as ‘Marmma Yogi’, to communicate a concise definition of its total functions. The name has great significance, as it is also in honor of the late Kesavan Nair Asaan who was known as Marmma Yogi during his time. About 2 centuries ago, a village named Kolani, 4 km. from Thodupuzha towards the town of Pala in Kerala nurtured the traditional ‘tharavad’ (noble family) named Ovoor. This was a well respected and reputed tharavad. Ovoor family maintained a full-fledged martial art school at Angamvetti, close to Kolani. In those days the ‘Asaan’ or the headmaster of such martial art schools named ‘Kalari’ had vital roles to play on behalf of the ruling king. He was entrusted by the king to collect tax, educate the public and give intensive training to selected people in martial arts; so that in times of emergency the king could call upon these super skilled warriors for defense. Yet another major function of a Kalari was to ensure the social as well as the physical wellness of the people in general.
