Psychiatrist William Glasser holds that every person requiring psychiatric help suffers from one basic inadequacy – the inability to fulfill his essential personality needs. It is this inability which causes personality problems and interpersonal conflict. A person’s behavior, however distorted represents his attempt to satisfy his basic needs. To the extent that his efforts are unsuccessful he will be problem to himself and/or to others. Glasser maintains that persons have only two essential personality needs – to love and be loved and to feel that one is worthwhile to oneself and others. It can be reduced these to a single indispensable need - to experience authentic love in a dependable relationship.

An individual’s personality hungers are all met to the degree that he participate in a relationship characterized by mutual ‘sensitivity and responsiveness to the needs of others’. Having received such love in early in his life one becomes loving person who naturally responds to the needs of others and thus fulfills his own need to give as well as receive love. Man’s other personality needs derived from his basic need for this quality of love in at least on relationship.

Professional Counseling is the utilization, by a minister, of a one-to-one or small group relationship to help people handle their problems of living more adequately and grow toward fulfilling their potentialities. This is achieved by helping them reduce the inner blocks which prevent them from relating in need-satisfying ways. People are blocked, to a painful degree, temporarily or chronically, in their ability to maintain need-satisfying relationships. Many factors involved: the lack of an adequate supply of mature love in early life, a traumatic crisis (eg. bereavement, illness, and employment), the paralysis of inner conflicts, debilitating anxiety, the accumulated results of irresponsible living or the vicious self-perpetuating cycle of dysfunctional relationships.
