About Gramya Resource Center for Women in Tarnaka, Secunderabad

Gramya is working in the poverty-stricken Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh, India. we are registered as a non profit voluntary organization.

We work in the lambada hamlets and other villages of the Devarakonda area of Nalgonda district, about 150 kms east of Hyderabad. The area is semi-arid and extremely under developed. The resource base is eroded and unproductive, with most of the agriculture being rainfed on very poor soils. Further, most farmers in the area are caught in a debt trap in attempting to grow cotton on these lands. There are very little industrial or public employment opportunities or organized off-farm work in the area, forcing people to migrate to neighboring districts for almost 5-6 months a year. This results in a vicious circle of neglecting their own small plots of land, decreases possibilities of developing stable economic activities and disrupts children's education. Women suffer Nutritional deficiencies and face severe violence.
