About NSS IIT Roorkee in Multi Activity Centre, 2nd floor, IIT, Roorkee

The description of various cells functioning under NSS are as follows:

On Campus Cells:

• Event Management and Promotion (EMP)
EMP or the Event Management and Promotions Cell was started to overtake the managing and promotions of all the central NSS events. Central events are those which are common to all the cells which may be some workshop or a welfare session.
Promotion is done by putting up notices and posters designed by Techno-Creative Cell around the campus (in hostels and main notice boards like the Library and Lecture Hall Complex) and some off-campus locations like schools and community centres.
Thus the cell is latched to the central NSS office and is an integral part of all the central events happening at the NSS.

• Techno creative:
Techno creative cell of NSS was established in order to document and keep track of the activities of the other eight cells of NSS and thereby an active part of every event/activity of NSS. The cell functions with four sub-cells namely Editorial, Graphic Design, Web Design and Photography. Editorial sub-cell documents the activities of the other cells of NSS and forming individual documents for the annual report. The volunteers cover both on-campus and off-campus events of NSS. Design sub-cell creates designs posters, presentations, etc. for various events of NSS. Photography sub-cell was created last year in Techno creative with an aim of capturing the expressions and visuals of the various events organized by the other cells of NSS. Photography and Editorial complement each other. Whereas the web design sub-cell, restarted from this year, will maintain the web-site, blog and other on-line activities of NSS.

• Prerna:
Prerna cell is, undoubtedly, one of the most active cells of NSS, IIT Roorkee. It strives for the welfare of the needy and underprivileged sections of the society. It focuses on teaching poor children from nearby areas who cannot afford proper tuitions due to lack of basic academic infrastructure. It emphasises not only the educational aspect but also on the overall development of their students involving interactive sessions.The classes, for these students, are held in Mandi cell.

Off Campus Cells:

• Navodaya:
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are a system of schools run under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, for gifted students in India. They are specifically tasked for finding talented children in rural areas of India and providing them with an education, equivalent to the best residential schools, disregarding their family's socio-economic condition.
Navodaya cell, IIT Roorkee facilitates the admission of financially poor children to the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, providing them with better primary education. Children from nearby villages attend the classes with zeal and enthusiasm. The students are tutored in mathematics and logical reasoning which is a part of Navodaya entrance exam. The cell proudly has to its credit carrying out one of the most successful and regularized activity of teaching village kids.

• Environment and Awareness:
This Cell of NSS oversees the socio ecological responsibility of the students. It creates awareness in the masses about the need for a healthy environment. A commendable job is being done by the cell through its various awareness rallies, presentations in schools to inculcate, in the future leaders, the need to save the environment and the various collection drives.
Believing in the power of awakened masses the cell is actively involved in dispersing knowledge on topics like NREGA, Ration Cards and Public Distribution system, Right to Vote, Women Empowerment, Tuberculosis, Cholera, Polio etc, in villages by the help of various plays and NUKKAD NATAKS. The awareness team aims to bring into notice the various problems that a society faces. They try to change the perspective of the common public on important issues like global warming, hazardous effects of polythene, alcohol, the increasing generation gap, poor usage of voting rights, blood donation and so on. The awareness team motivates the public to take an initiative and bring about a change. They use the medium of street plays, panel discussions, awareness campaigns and surveys from time to time to spread awareness among the people. Thus, in this manner the awareness cell has been spreading information among the masses about important issues that may bring welfare to the society.

• RT Education:
RT Education, also known as RT Disha conducts classes for the children at the C-class club. The members themselves visit the nearby villages of Khanjarpur and Bhangeri and urge people to send their kids to the classes. As a result, many students have come forward to enrol for the classes. The classes are conducted every day of the week except Sunday, from 6pm to 7pm. The members continue to work hard towards improving the strength of the classes so that more and more students get the benefit of this benevolent idea. The main aim of the cell is to educate poor children and prepare them for a better and brighter future.
The RT education cell also focuses on the extracurricular aspects in education. Being in close touch with the parents of the children, the cell stresses on the all-round development. With personality development being specially focused upon, the cell is also actively involved in the coaching for DTSE (Disha talent search examination).

• Model Village:
In order to facilitate developmental strategies and to bridge the gap between urban and rural India, Model Village, NSS IIT Roorkee strives to work hard in this direction and ensures the availability of basic amenities, facilities and useful commodities to the rural folk. By means of providing free education, conducting surveys to determine the state and standard of living conditions of the people concerned, they provide a sympathetic heart that feels for these people and a worthy ear that is always there to hear their distress and dejections.
The activity which forms the part and parcel of this cell is providing free education to the children of all age groups and thus, preparing them for the impending competition that awaits them when they actually get into the intricacies of real life. NSS Model Village Cell, as its name justifies, aims to create a model village where the people are developed, socially, culturally and economically. The journey which started two years back from a small section of the village has now moved on to the entire village, thus creating more awareness and involving even greater participation.

• Pragati:
Living for oneself is a deed which most of the persons pursue, but the quality of living for others and serving humanity is possessed only by a true human being. The PRAGATI cell of NSS, IIT Roorkee is one such initiative to spread the message of social service and service to mankind. Though comparatively new to the other sections of NSS, this cell has taken immense strides in doing social good, both in and out of the campus. It has collected data about the demographic and economic status of the villages simultaneously helping the villagers to know about the various beneficiary government schemes. Surveys are mainly done in Telliwala village neighbouring the campus. The cell members are also involved in imparting education to children of Telliwala village on a weekly basis. Thus Pragati cell is an effort to work for our fellow human beings and make the society a place worth living.
