About Principal Agricultural Office -PAO Palakkad in Principal Agriculture Office, Civil Station, Palakkad

Palakkad is the 2nd largest District of the Kerala State, with a geographical area of 467586 Ha and a total cropped area of 302368 Ha and is the rice bowl of Kerala. In addition to paddy all arid and temperate crops are grown in this district.
The PAO’s office supervise the schemes of department of Agriculture, LSGDS and other agencies like SHM, ATMA, WGDP … which are implemented through the Krishibhavans, at panchayath level, which are the basic units (91+4). At the block level ADA’s act as the voice of authority (13 Nos). The department also have 5 seed farms, 4 special farms , 1 Agmark lab, 1 district soil testing lab, 1 mobile testing lab, 1 fertilizer quality control lab, RATTC and one assistant executive engineer office. The works of these above institutions are coordinated and supported by the principal agriculture office.
Extension activities are coordinated by ATMA and also implemented through Krishibhavans and ADAs. The total staff strength of agriculture department of this district - including farm labourers - is nearly 600. Every Year the district agriculture officer implements nearly 25 plan schemes with nearly 250 components, and 6 non plan schemes. In addition other schemes like SHM , NFSM, ( Palakkad being the only district in which this scheme is implemented) Attapadi package, Attapadi tribal sub plan, RIDF, BRGF, Water shed schemes, Palakkad nelkrishi vikasana agency scheme etc are also being implemented. During the financial year of 2014-15 a sum of Rs 80 crores was issued to farmers of this district as subsidies.
