Surgeons from Mumbai and around the country have come together to set up India's first Center of Excellence for Minimal Access Surgery Training (CEMAST) at Mahalaxmi, Mumbai. The center is headed by Prof. Tehemton E. Udwadia, a pioneer surgeon who introduced laparoscopic surgery not only in India but in the entire developing world.

Prof. Tehemton E. Udwadia, Chairman of CEMAST said, “This Center will train laparoscopic surgeons from every specialty like general surgery, urology, gynecology, pediatric surgery. In the near future, the Center will add courses to include Thoracoscopic surgery, Orthopaedics, and endoscopic ENT surgery. The Center will also train nurses working in MAS theatres, biomedical engineers for maintaining and repairing instruments and Central Sterilization Department (CSSD) personnel to ensure that the entire MAS team is trained.” Prof. Udwadia informed that an important activity of the Centre will be training the medical students and postgraduates in fundamentals of surgical skills.
