Bijoy Jain was born in Mumbai in 1965. He studied in the United States and gained his diploma
at Washington University in St. Louis in 1990. Between 1989 and 1991 he worked with Richard
Meier and Partners in Los Angeles and then spent some time travelling before returning to live
and work in Mumbai. His office, Bijoy Jain + Associates, was established in 1996 and Studio
Mumbai, under the direction of Priya Jain, in 2005. Bijoy Jain has built both houses and
projects in the tourism sector. In the patient evolution of these small projects he has developed
a new, hybrid architectural approach by combining Indian notions about the nature of living with
ideas of both contemporary design and ecology.

. Ever since the completion
of his first projects, architectural critics have found praise for a young architect who manages to
achieve, precisely where no one expected to find it, a remarkably subtle synthesis of aesthetic
principles, constructional skill and ecological coherence. Both this maturity and
contemporaneity result from long years of reflection – carried out with a combination of close
study and appropriate distance - about Indian society and its future.
