About Sassanian Restaurant and Bakery in 1st Marine Street,Dhobi Talao, Mumbai

Sassanian Restaurant and Bakery was established in 1913 by Mr. Kaikhushroo Rustom Yazdabadi who had come from Iran to India to settle down, then later taken over by his son Mr. Rustom Yazdabadi. In 1947 Khodadad M. Kola joined the Yazdabadi family as partner and since then the two families have been running the business.
In 1913, Sassanian only sold Chai (tea) brun and bun maska along with toothbrush, cigarettes, imported chocolates, Polson butter, sweets etc. Later in the stage they stopped selling items that you find in a grocery store (during that time known as provision stores) and started selling Plum Cakes, Mawa Cakes, Bread Pudding along with Chai, brun and bun maska.
The Restaurant still has its old charm of marble tables, Polish bentwood chairs which are the unique feature of Iranian restuarants along with mirrors studded on the wall with picturesque paintings framed in glass.
After the demise of both Rustom Yazdabadi and Khodadad Kola their sons Shahrukh Irani and Meheraban Kola took over the business. IN the late 1990s Meheraban Kola with the help of his wife Ruhangeez Kola (also grand-daughter of Rustom Yazdabadi) made some renovations to their bakery section and improvised on their menu, now called Sassanian Boulangerie. They made sure they still had the old charm by keeping their old heating ovens and cupboards and at the same time introduced Chicken rolls, waldorf salad, whole wheat bread, garlic bread, black forest cake, lagan nu custard etc.
In 2000, Sassanian changed their restaurant section by revamping the place and introducing sizzlers, dhansak dal, biryani, along with their old menu of chai, brun and bun maska and omlette.
Today after 100 years the place is still bustling with a mix of crowd either eating at the restaurant or a take out of chicken puffs and chicken rolls etc.
Look forward to celebrating another 100 years of Sassanian
