About South Dum Dum Avenue Sporting Club in 19, Acharya Prafilla Chandra Avenue, Kolkata

The vast expanse of South Dum Dum locality is dotted with many a club, cultural & social organizations etc. Among these all South Dum Dum Avenue Sporting Club stands out distinctively for its distinguishable outlook, activities and guiding principles. The club began its journey based on the ethos of conventional club activities like organizing seasonal games of football, cricket, badminton, annual sports etc. Which gave it its initial identity. Gradually, many socio-cultural programs such as Rabindra Jayanti, Saraswati Puja, Netaji Birthday Anniversary, Independence Day, Republic Day celebration etc were included in the yearly program calendar of the Club. After the club room got its permanent concrete shape the members, with heightened spirit, immediately started morning sessions of physical exercise with traditional apparatus which added a new dimension to their daily life. Remarkably, from the very beginning boys & men of different age group came forward to join hands and associate themselves with the Club’s yearlong activities. Which enjoyed the moral support of the local residents in every way. However, the local residents always rued the fact ‘Kali Puja’ was never held in Acharya Chandra Prafulla Avenue and going forward a few years the club members took it upon themselves to gift the residents their dream festival a community ‘Shyama Puja’ in the locality. During the initial few years the club members bore the entire expenses of this Puja that was performed in very simple but austere manner where everyone was welcome to join in. Gradually public support grew in favor of this Puja and finally with their spontaneous financial contribution the Puja assumed ‘Sarbjonin’ stature that little by little gave it the pomp and grandeur to arrive at its present popular avatar. Times rolled on like this with games, cultural events, socio-religions festivities, winter picnic and all other activities which are part & parcel of traditional club culture. Eventually, at one point all these became a stereotypical and the members felt an inner calling to do something different to pay back to society in their united humanitarian endeavor by providing some very essential life-saving & health-care support. As an opening act in this social service front the club chose to organize Blood Donation Camp alongside various other health check-up camps like Eye, Skin, Blood-Sugar, Blood-Group, Child-Health and the first of its kind a Heart check-up Camp conducted by frontline Heart Institutes. The huge response and participation of the local populace in these camps made worthwhile the tireless service and efforts invested by the club members. Going forward a few years on this noble venture, one very senior founder member came up with a unique proposal to set up an Oxygen Cylinder Supply Unit in the club premises and it was readily accepted by the members. The unit with 6 Cylinders available 24x7 at just the cost price was inaugurated in the 2012 with unstinted moral support and patronage of the local MP, MLA, Municipal Councilors the cylinder count has reached 30 at present. Not only this; a number of students from economically backward families are being encouraged with financial support from the Club to continue their studies. Also on some occasions the Club distributed clothes to needy people.
On top of it all, by virtue of an inherent nobility in the work ethics of South Dum dum Avenue Sporting Club its members never hesitate to extend their helping hand to the local people in their hors of crisis, disaster, danger, loss whatever with total disregard to caste, creed, religion, economic stature and political identity. That is why South Dum Dum Avenue Sporting Club is not just another run of the mill club. It has earned itself a unique philanthropic identity and established itself among the larger section of the society as a permanent source of festive joy, life support facilities.
