The Technicians’ Studio is situated in Tollygunge, the nerve-centre of Bengali film industry. It has two wings. Construction of a new floor at Technicians' Studio-I is under progress. One of the two floors at Prince Anwar Shah Road complex was demolished in 2004 for the construction of Lake Gardens Flyover.

The administrative functions of the studio are now looked after by the Administrator, who is an officer deputed by the Department.
The Technicians’ Studio has passed through a chequered history in its making towards present Tollywood, one of the major cinematic establishments of country.

The studio is the birthplace of epoch-making films, such as, Apu Trilogy, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Ajantric, Charulata, Dada Thakur, Gana Debata. Before 1952, this Studio was known as Kali Films Studio. The Studio was owned by Sri Priyanath Ganguly, for a period of 16 years beginning from January, 1935. Since May 1951, the Kali Films Studio had to pass through a number of litigations and finally was converted to Technicians Studio Pvt. Ltd.

In the year 1952 as some of the famous technicians viz-Sri Ramananda Sengupta (Cinematographer), Sri Satyendra-nath Chatterjee (Sound Engineer), Sri Asutosh Nag, Sri Debesh Ghosh (Sound Recordist), Sri Durgadas Mitra (Sound Recordist),Sri Kalyan Gupta (Director), Sri Ajit Kr. Sengupta (Cinematographer/ Director) and some others came forward to form a co-operative in order to revive the age-old Studio, which again came on the verge of liquidation as one of the landowners of the Studio did not agree to renew the lease period. This situation prompted the State Government to take over the Studio management and requisition of the entire Studio as well as staffs and machineries on December 24, 1979. Finally a Tribunal had also been set up by the Government to ascertain the value of the plant and machinery as also the shares. In accordance with the verdict of the tribunal, the Government paid up the amounts to the share holders of the Studio and the compensation for the land as duly determined, was given to the owners of land. The State government finally took over the studio on May 1, 1983.
