About Centre For Built Environment in 2/5, Sarat Bose Road, Kolkata

Centre for Built Environment, a Non-profit professional society registered with the govt. in 1992-93. Its main objective is to disseminate knowledge in Architecture, Human settlements & Environment through lectures seminars, and conferences, exhibitions, publication, research study projects and guidance to students and other organisations. It does not have any employee and works in indirect financing in the voluntary system. CBE consists of Architects, City-planners, some social scientists, & environmental engineers. It is an umbrella organisation with members from private, university, govt., other professional societies, institutions and NGOs. It is linked with similar organisations in many countries. CBE has founder, Life-members and ordinary members. It has a youth-forum with young professionals and students. It has about 50 members of which 25 are active. But there are large number of non-members who are associated with CBE, with linkage with other organisations and universities it has a few hundred persons connected with it. CBE is managed by a 10 member elected (for every 3 years) executive committee. The committee may nominate members from outside if necessary. It publishes a newsletter “Built Environment”, which circulated throughout the world. It has a library and a documentation centre. CBE was accredited to UN-HABITAT, during Istanbul conference in 1996. It has the observer status on climate change granted by the United Nations in 2009. CBE’s functioning was presented at a networking event in Nanjing, China during UN- HABITAT world urban forum, 2008.
