"SOWMEN MITTER Initiative for Language ENGLISH & Related Studies (SMILERS)" is not just another institution with an intention to cater to the needs of those interested in the studies of English language and literature. It's a bit different. It seeks to promote and foster a sense of inclusiveness that is inherent in the very tenor of the language. Being one of the major lingua francas used on a global scale, its reach and the influence it wields over millions across the world is something unputdownable. And in a country like India where so many languages and dialects are spoken, its need is even more pronounced. In spite of having taken its roots as an implement of the colonialists to facilitate their rule during the days of colonial subjugation, the language proved its worth and eventually made the alien soil/s its home, albeit a little modified. But that's been its fate - here and elsewhere - undergoing changes in the course of its journey. Most of the people who use/speak it do it hardly the way a native speaker does.The grammar of the language has kept it from going haywire, and yet the need to use it in sync with the native versions cannot be wished away - simple because derivatives cannot/should not replace the norm; they can at best bear a testimony to its liveliness.
