About Bhabna in C N Roy Road Govt Housing Estate, Kolkata

C. N. Roy Road Govt. Housing Estate - spread over 4.75 acres in South-East Kolkata’s Picnic Garden area, off Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The 232 families nestling within the sprawling greens, started inhabiting the place way back in 1973, with a lot of dreams during that early stage of their lives. All inhabitants of this estate are lucky enough to have two moderate sized play-grounds, and their own community centre. Overall about 70% of the entire housing complex is open space filled with greeneries.

We, the tenants of C. N. Roy Road Govt. Housing Estate, are dedicated towards cultivating, promoting and celebrating Bengali culture and the other cultures of India in general, through various social and cultural events, community activities, and support for charitable causes.
In 1974, a few respectable tenants had started ‘Durga Puja’ to celebrate the biggest festival of the Bengalis with all residents on a small scale. Sadly, we lost quite a few of them. When we sit and talk with the few who are still between us, the excitement in their voice while sharing their experiences back then is indeed something to witness and treasure. It seems as if they organised it just a year back. They had to cross a lot of huddles to make this event as successful as it is today.
From the inception, the attitude keeps us away and separate from the other so called barowari pujas. We have been like one joint family comprising of 232 houses and our celebration - a BIG FAMILY festival. Everyone pitches in and does their bit. It starts with going to Kumartuli to order the Pratima and continues through bodhan, anjalis, pankti bhojan, shandhi puja, sindur khela, bisarjan, until the bijaya sammelani to end the festival on the best possible note.

Durga Puja brings us together in this busy, fast materialistic life. That is one time we meet our childhood buddies and enjoy as we used to back in those days. A complimentary community lunch is arranged for about 800-900 people of the estate, for their family and their friends on two of the five auspicious days of euphoria. There is an exceptional spirit of brotherhood and harmony amongst the residents here, who all come together and celebrate Durga Puja with great passion and enthusiasm. May the supreme Goddess bless all and the spirit.
