About Ayuryatra in 2nd Floor Komath Building, Komath Lane, Palarivattom, Kochi

With a history of nearly five thousand years, Ayurveda is a holistic science of healing that has withstood the test of time. The term ‘Ayurveda’ comes from the ancient language of Sanskrit and when translated into English, means the “science of life.” It is, therefore, not just a practice of healing but a form of lifestyle adopted to maintain perfect balance and harmony within the human existence. It is based on the premise that life symbolizes an intelligent synchronization of the mind, body, soul and the senses. It recognizes the importance of physical balance, emotional releases, mental health, environmental mindfulness and spiritual progression in the whole aspect of health.

The earliest documented scriptures regarding Ayurveda are to be found in the Indian books of knowledge known as the ‘Vedas.’ Historians believe that the documentation of this medical literature occurred between 2000 B.C. and 1000 B.C. Seers, sages and divine people from all over the land engaged in profound discussions and shared their knowledge and experiences of the human body, life and the universe derived from sensory as well as extra-sensory perceptions. These discussions were complied into texts, with the most popular among them being the Carakasamhita, Susruta Samhita and Astangahrdaya. The practice ushered in a new era in the field of medicine and healing and soon became an esteemed and well recognized system throughout the Indian subcontinent.

By the 4th century A.D., the teachings of Ayurveda were translated into Chinese and by the 8th century into Arabic. In the 16th century, this practice was also embraced by the West when Paracelsus, a Swiss German Renaissance physician practiced and propagated a system of medicine, which borrowed heavily from Ayurveda. The treatment methods of Ayurveda are popular due to its non-toxic and non-invasive nature. The primary aim is to re-establish balance and harmony in the human body through detoxification and specific cleansing methods. Unlike modern medicine which involves the use of various chemical components, Ayurvedic medicine emphasizes the use of minerals and herbs to treat various ailments.

Today, Ayurveda is recognized as a complete medical system by the World Health Organization (WHO) with numerous clinics, health and training centers all over the world. Ayurvedic treatment resorts are increasingly growing in popularity with the state of Kerala (India), considered to be one of the best destinations for Ayurvedic therapies and treatments.
