Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was established in May 1950 and started its academic programme in August 1951. Besides being the oldest pace-setter of the IIT system of education in the country, it is the largest and the most diversified among the six IITs offering 22 undergraduate disciplines and 50 postgraduate disciplines.
The department was established during the inception of the institute in 1951. It took a pioneering role in establishing two inter-disciplinary undergraduate programmes in instrumentation engineering (1982) and energy engineering (1983). The major areas of faculty expertise include Opto-Electronics, Electromagnetics, Power Electronic Drives, Industrial Automation and Control, High Voltage Engineering, Power Systems, Superconductivity, Signal and Image Processing, Industrial and Biomedical Instrumentation and control and many more. Some of the recent sponsored projects include Uninterrupted Super conducting Power Supply based on Magnetic Storage, Instrumentation and Control for Johnson Controls, Variable Air Volume Conditioning Systems, Optical Line Overhead Equipment Parameters (OHP) monitoring for Indian Railways, Fault detection Diagnostic Control, Semi-Autonomous Electrical vehicles, Opto-electronic and Image Band instrumentation for Steel Plants etc, Real time Digital Simulation of Power Systems.
