The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body set up under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act NO. XXXVIII of 1949) enacted by the Parliament of India to impart education, training and regulate the Chartered Accountancy profession .

During its more than 61 years of existence, the Institute has achieved recognition as a premier accounting body not only in the country but also globally for its contribution in the fields of education, professional development, maintenance of high accounting and auditing standards.

The Institute has its headquarters at New Delhi with 5 Regional Offices at Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Kolkata and New Delhi and 126 branches spread all over the country. In addition, it has also set up 20 Chapters outside India and has opened an offices in Dubai & England as well. The Institute is proud to have more than 1,60,000 CA Professionals at its roll.

The affairs of the Institute are managed by the Council in accordance with the provisions of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 and the Chartered Accountants Regulation 1988. The Council consists of 40 members of whom 32 are elected by the members and remaining eight are nominated by the Central Government.
