About College of Fisheries SKUAST-Kashmir in Faculty of Fisheries Rangil Ganderbal, Ganderbal

Jammu and Kashmir is endowed with vast and varied fishery resources, which offer immense potential for augmenting fish production for domestic consumption as well as for exports for improving the social well-being of the fisher-folk, for enhancing the nutritional status of the population and for providing self-employment opportunities to the rural population thereby accelerating rural development.

The adequate Research & Development coupled with Education support in coldwater fisheries sector are very important and critical to the region. Even the Human resource Development for this sector is very adequate. No Institution in the country is conducting Resident Instruction programmes in Fishery Science specific to temperate waters. Most of the programmes are tailor-made for warm water, coastal and marine sectors. Therefore, in order to remove this imbalance and address the issues of coldwater/temperate sector in greater details to generate suitable technologies for raising per unit productivity. The Faculty of Fisheries in SKUAST (K) was established in November 2005 and its mandate is to conduct research and disseminate the findings and other technical information through extension education programmes, besides producing skilled and trained manpower for the better administration and management of fisheries sector in the State.
