About Schools of Equality in 7, Kalakshetra Avenue 2nd Street, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai

All people on our planet are supposed to be equal, right? We all have equal rights, duties and responsibilities. We all have to follow the same rules in school. And we all have to study and pass the same exams. But do we really feel equal to other people? All the time? Ever wondered whether all of us have access to the same opportunities? Or whether we are expected to excel at the same things? Are we all supposed to behave in the same way? In what ways are we different, and in what ways are we just the same as our classmates?

“Schools of Equality” is an activity-based programme that engages students in discussions of equality. As a part of the programme, they will interact with leaders from social justice movements, lawyers, artists, writers, photographers, musicians, performance artists, and therapists to articulate their views on equality and social justice. The programme will enable students to understand diversity and equality, preparing them to address issues that they are faced with as members of society.

The programme aims to:

1. Enable students to understand the ways in which language, media and popular culture can perpetuate violence and discrimination;
2. Interrogate the concept of equality, power and injustice in the context of gender and its attendant issues like class, religion, sexuality, caste and disability;
3. Encourage them to build healthy relationships, and to treat each other and themselves with respect; and
4. Understand their rights as guaranteed in the Constitution, national legislation and international conventions, frame their own school of thought about equality and finally create their own School constitution to effect social change.
