CHANGE THE CULTURE, CHANGE THE GAME

A leader par excellence, Dr. Sir. Siddhartha Dasgupta, is a person with extraordinary talents and a multifaceted personality. Heading Royal Fortune Ventures (I) Limited, Kolkata, as Managing Director & CEO, he expressed his worries and possible way out of the present market scenario related to the direct selling industry.
In an exclusive interview with The Business Diary Team, he spoke at length and in detail about what direct selling is all about and what it takes for a person to achieve success in the industry.
Dr. Dasgupta is also West Bengal State President for World Human Rights Protection Association (WHRPA) and Secretary (East) for Federation of Direct Selling Association (FDSA).
Royal Fortune Ventures (I) Limited, is a direct selling company with good ethical background and a promise to serve the society.
Holding two key posts as ‘Director & CEO (Global Operations)’, Fortune Ventures Worldwide, based in London and also being the Managing Director & CEO (Global Operations), Fortune Ventures Global Limited incorporated in Hong Kong, both internationally popular direct selling companies, Dr. Dasgupta is surprised at the way the industry is facing challenges to function ethically.
“You cannot put everybody in the same boat”, was his immediate reply when asked about a few companies which were responsible in creating a huge mess in the Indian direct selling market. “Our company is founded on ethical principles and we are concerned about our distributors. We work to protect their interests and see that we deliver all our promises”, he said.
Excerpts of the interview:
Business Diary: What is the present situation and challenges being faced by the direct selling companies in India, especially Eastern India?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: After the recent ugly incidents in few companies, causing major damage and dealing a death blow to the common man who believed them, the face of the industry is at stake. People have lost their money and are struggling to make a comeback. Though these companies do not come under direct selling industry, it is becoming increasingly difficult for a common man to differentiate.
Business Diary: What is your opinion or what do you want to mean by common people?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: With due respect to all, I term common people to those who are not directly related to the industry, people who do not have an in-depth knowledge about the industry work ethics and code of conduct. People, who see it from a distance, are not dwelling deep into the matter or the facts.
Business Diary: You as the Secretary of FDSA (East) how do you rate your organisation?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: First of all let me thank FDSA for giving us such a good platform to fight for our basic rights. FDSA is a non political organisation, which is fully and wholly involved in the fight with the government of India to bring a proper and acceptable legislation or a regulator for this Industry. More than 7 crore people in India are directly involved in direct selling, in different forms. The figure will at least triple if you add their family members to the numbers. So standing and monitoring such a vast issue and taking all the pains, FDSA must get the full support and salute from all in this industry. But the fact of the matter is ----- whatever you need to do, you need financial support. We are not getting that ----from all ends. Initially FDSA made all the expenses from its own kitty but now it has become big. Only few companies have extended their supportive hands. If at least 50 per cent of the companies would have extended their support without any prejudice, things would have moved much faster. The best part with FDSA is –The books of accounts are always open to its members to scrutinise and judge all the expenses. But nevertheless we are on our mission and we will take it forward.
Business Diary: As you said that only few companies are responsible for the wrong things, then why is it that the entire industry is suffering?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: UNAWARENESS is the main problem in our country. Globally even if you leave apart USA and UK, countries like Italy, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and even China has made significant development in this area during the recent years. But the problem with us, according to me is that –we do not learn things properly, and knowing half-heartedly we manage to misrepresent with all types of juicy stories and facts. This is where we lack to compete.
Business Diary: What is your opinion about the misrepresentation of the terms like MLM, Pyramid Structure, Ponzi Scheme , Quick and easy Money etc. ?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: That’s the basic problem. As I said earlier, people are not aware of the real facts but that does not prevent them in making expert comments. It is my challenge to anybody regarding the terms you mentioned above. Nothing is wrong and illegal with those terms. In short:
MLM – Multi level Marketing ----- Can you show me a single sales company which does not have Multi level selling structure? In an organisation (sales) everyone is selling from their own perspective and capacity. A General Manager of a sales company act in such a way which ends up in the sales of the company, the marketing department is doing the same thing, the advertisement department is advertising to sell the products and last but not the least the sales team is totally on sales only. Is it not a Multi Level Marketing system?

Pyramid Structure : From The ancient days when Pyramids were fully in existence till today can you show me a structure which is not pyramidical in shape. Take the instance of a family, a small office, a big corporate house, any government department everywhere if you draw the structure – it will turn up to be in the shape of a pyramid. Few people willingly and without having proper knowledge are misrepresenting it.

Ponzi Scheme ----- How many can tell the meaning of the name?

I quote my answer: A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to its investors from their own money or the money paid by subsequent investors, rather than from profit earned by the individual or organization running the operation. The Ponzi scheme usually entices new investors by offering higher returns than other investments, in the form of short-term returns that are either abnormally high or unusually consistent. Perpetuation of high returns requires an ever-increasing flow of money from new investors to keep the scheme going.
The scheme is named after Charles Ponzi who became notorious for using the technique in 1920. Ponzi did not invent the scheme but his operation took in so much money that it was the first to become known throughout the United States. Ponzi's original scheme was based on the arbitrage of international reply coupons for postage stamps; however, he soon diverted investors' money to make payments to earlier investors and himself.
So tell me how it is related to all in the world. There may be exceptions in each and every field on this planet earth, and that does not mean each one of us is related to it?
Quick & Easy Money: It is again a vague and meaningless word used by people who are unaware. What do you mean by it? If by chance somebody can earn quick money from doing ethical and legal business, is it wrong? In the share market the prices of a share might suddenly go up. If a person sells his portion of that share –he is also making quick and easy money. Is it illegal? In other sense if we are against quick money can I say that we are delaying our development in all respects? Yes! Please note that whatever I am talking about is in regards to legal and ethical acts, the act which is in accordance to the Law of the Land.
Business Diary: What would you like to suggest to the Government?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: The ministers and the top officials of the Government are highly capable to understand and realize the actual facts. I would only humbly request them to take an amicable positive step which will save the direct selling industry and crores of people depending on it, at crores of people attached to it, and at the same time eliminate the fraud and illegal companies that come in disguise to cheat common people. Given the permission I would further request the government to bring out a mechanism where complaints can be lodged on any suspicious company. The government can take action against them only if the complaint is valid.
Business Diary: What according to you may be the easiest way to stop the crisis and the blame game as we see many agents committing suicide after being assaulted by people?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: This is a very important issue. The government is trying in their own way to bring a solution to it. But regarding the blame game --- One must know and understand that the problem starts when you go and complain to the administration in a wrong mode. Let me clear one simple fact ---- most of the companies do have an Agreement of Terms & Conditions which needs to be fulfilled and signed by the member or distributor prior to start working on the new opportunity. At this point nobody goes to the administration to seek their advice, on whether their decision is right or wrong? It is only when they are not happy (may be the company do not keep its commitments, may be the particular person could not succeed to fulfil his/her dreams, may be he/she has been wrongly advised by any other person than the company) the easiest way is to go and complain. They do not understand that as per Indian Contract Act they cannot complain as they have already signed an agreement. Now the answer comes –“I have signed it in belief”. If that is so, you have no authority to blame others. In such cases we are equally accused. In case of real and valid complaints government can send a note to the State administration to check whether there has been a contract initially or not. If it is there then these complaints might not be accepted to stop the unwanted blame game. The fact of the matter remains ‘when we make profit it is ours, and if we fail to make it is other’s responsibility’.
Business Diary: What is your role as the President of World Human Rights Protection Association for the state of West Bengal?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: Again this is a platform from which lot of positive work can be done. As the President of WHRPA for West Bengal, we are trying hard to stand by the side of the people who need our help. In regards to Direct Selling Industry ---- we feel that the birth right of every person is food, clothes and shelter. There should be no such act by which people lose their basic birth right. If we could not show them a way to live we cannot afford to stop them from earning through a system, if it is legal and valid. We are strictly monitoring the situation, in our ways.
Business Diary: Lastly you are the Managing Director & CEO of one Indian and two international companies, one in London and the other in Hong Kong. How do you differentiate your companies with others and what are your suggestions to the young and interested group of people who are ready to make a career in direct selling?
Dr. Sir. Siddhartha: Let me first of tell you that the scenario is entirely different in UK and Hong Kong. Though our company is in early teens we judiciously maintain the code of ethics of this industry worldwide. We do not claim to be a very big company, we do not make any false promises, and you need to pass through several disclaimers before you reach the main page of our website. This is nothing but we want our consumers and associates to know the facts. We have a consumer redressal cell, which is on the vigil and active. We tell people openly that if you are very much keen and interested about the products then you should buy it from the general market. There you will get a number of choices, you can bargain etc. In our case the choice is limited. But people come to us only because they see an earning opportunity in the form of direct selling. Our payouts are purely dependant on the sales volume generated by a particular person or his team. We tell clearly “to earn you have to perform”. Nothing can be achieved without proper performance. We do not show big dreams. Our associates are aware that whatever we tell is a projected one, which purely depends upon performance and sales volume. You can quit within our systems. If any of our associate is caught promoting something wrong about our company, we immediately suspend him till the fact comes out.
My humble suggestion to the people of my country ---- Friends there is no better way than direct selling to bring happiness and stability in your life. You need to select a proper company, which fulfils all the statutory requirements of our country. All companies are good. It’s only how you represent and work matters a lot.
The most interesting part of direct selling is that you need not leave anything to become a part of it. You can be a full timer or a part timer.
I have tried to give my thoughts in a very simple manner here below. Just go through it understand and take your call. You might lose some of your valued time but that can also bring a drastic and dramatic change in your lives. You will lose nothing. That’s my promise.

Direct Selling Offers Flexibility and Financial Freedom

If you want to spread your entrepreneurial wings but have little or no business experience, don’t have a product or service to offer or are simply looking for a proven system for success, direct selling might be the ideal opportunity.
For more than 100 years, direct selling companies have offered independent representatives the ability to purchase products at wholesale prices and earn a profit by selling them at retail prices. Most direct selling companies also allow representatives to earn commissions for introducing new sales reps to the business. This business model relies on independent contractors, rather than traditional advertising, to spread the word about a company’s products or services. The word-of-mouth marketing approach works for several reasons: Consumers appreciate the personal service, the convenience of shopping from home, and the comfort of buying from those they know and trust.
Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s Mad Money, is bullish on direct selling, especially during a slowing economy. “Direct selling is a great model…with high gross margins, low capital intensity, lots of free cash flow,” he said on a recent show. “It’s a fragmented industry with gigantic room for growth. The top 15 players only account for about half the market.”
Amy M. Robinson, Direct Selling Association Vice President of Communications and Media Relations, points out that, while many people seek additional income during lean economic times, “in all honesty, direct selling is hot because it’s a fun, convenient way to shop that people enjoy. So, poor economic times or not, people find direct selling to be appealing. Great products, personal service and income potential are elements of direct selling that make it a strong economic contender at all times.”
“People motivated to get started in direct selling typically share certain attributes,” “Most seek supplemental income, either short-term or long term. The social aspect also is appealing for those who love to meet new people and many enjoy buying products and services they already use—at a lucrative price and last but not the least they stand on a solid platform from which they can kick start their own business.
With a direct selling business opportunity you can: Join a legally ethical company, which firmly follows the system of the land, where pay outs are given purely on sales volume and not on recruitment of people. A company which does not makes any false commitments or promises for abnormal benefits going out of the way. The products in a direct selling company are always not that important. The main important thing is what you can benefit from the company. Slowly but long term gains shall make you stable and financially sound in the future. But remember without sincere and passionate effort nothing has happened in the past and nothing will happen in the future. So you have to perform in a systematic judicial way to be on the Top. Where business is booming and there’s always room at the top. Direct selling, sometimes referred to as network marketing, is a $32 billion industry in the United States and a $110 billion industry worldwide. The millions of individuals building direct selling businesses determine for themselves when they want to move up the career ladder and exactly how high they want to climb.
Tap into a proven system for success. Avoid wasting time or money by learning from others’ experiences and wisdom. Direct selling companies often provide high-quality, high-impact marketing tools, including personal Web sites, brochures, catalogues, DVDs and CDs to help direct sellers present a professional image—at a fraction of what it would cost to produce the same tools on their own. Additionally, training in best practices is frequently offered online and via conference calls as well as at local and national conferences.
Start a business (of your very own) for Rs. 10,000/- or less. Direct selling companies offer big opportunity with minimum start up costs. You can set up office at your kitchen table with phone and laptop. Low overhead combined with minimal (if any) inventory expenses make direct selling businesses affordable. And because many companies handle online orders and deliver directly to customers, independent representatives can focus their time on connecting with potential clients and team members.
Experience flexibility and time freedom: The flexibility to work around full-time jobs or to create an income stream that fits into their families' schedules is a huge perk. Because each representative is an independent contractor, not an employee, there is no set schedule or required number of hours. On average, part-time direct sellers devote three to 10 hours per week to their businesses. Those who pursue the business full time invest 15 to 35 hours per week. In either case, representatives can set their own schedules and build their businesses during off hours and lunch breaks or on weekends.
Earn what you’re worth. When you’re the boss, you don’t have to ask for a raise—you simply go out and earn one. A results-driven industry, direct selling levels the playing field by offering the same opportunity to everyone regardless of age, ethnicity, gender or socioeconomic background. Equal opportunity, a clearly defined career path and no earning restrictions mean there are no limits on what successful direct sellers can earn. While some in the industry are earning millions, it’s more common for direct sellers to use their businesses to earn extra cash per month to pay for dinners out, private school, college expenses, cars and family vacations. Most importantly you can reduce your commitments and liabilities a lot if you are in connection with a company with genuine intentions and vision. Leaving apart all if we take the young bubbling Engineers in our country, without hurting them and with due respect to their National & International Employers the salary which is being paid to them does not perhaps gives them the capacity of fulfilling their basic dreams in life. Just imagine the amount of Time and Money that has been spent on them, resulting into a career where one cannot be delighted. It is surprising and really strange for their parents and to them also. My question to these young brigade is ------Are you getting as per your worthiness? Are you guys happy and comfortable? How long will one take to buy a Flat of their own without the help of others (Bank or Financial Institutions)? You need to have a Bank loan for sure but how shall one fill the gap or vacuum which will be created in one’s income when the monthly repayment instalments starts getting deducted from the salary ? That too for 10 to 15 years, if not more. It is for sure that your company will not be kind enough to increase your payment for you buying your flat? There are millions of examples which can be cited, which needs to be carefully and sincerely taken care off right from the beginning.
Maximize your earnings with residual (or passive) income. Leveraging TIME is the one and only way to become Rich and make others Rich. By building a team of people who love the products and are excited about telling others about the opportunity, direct sellers can leverage their time and maximize their income. Capitalizing on a team’s efforts means a business owner can devote 10 hours a week to their business, but with 10 other people also devoting 10 hours to their businesses, the team leader earns a commission from the collective sales and team-building results of 110 hours’ effort. It also means a team builder’s business has the potential to grow, even while he or she is on vacation.
“I like the honesty about direct selling,” says economist Paul Zane Pilzer, author of The Next Millionaires, “because it openly tells people the way to get rich are residual income: Get paid tomorrow for something you did yesterday—and allow it accumulate.”
Reap the rewards of helping others succeed. Building a team definitely makes financial sense, but it also offers significant intangible rewards. Though representatives run their businesses independently, they often develop a family-like connection with their team members and others in the business. The friendships formed and the experiences of helping others improve their personal and financial lives are often as meaningful to direct sellers as the money they earn. In the process when one is financially stable, his way of living changes and his expenses goes down up to the root of the society, helping directly or indirectly to all who cannot be a Direct seller for whatever reasons.
Get the recognition—and prizes—you deserve. In the corporate world, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, much less free vacations, luxury cars or fine jewellery. Direct selling companies know most people work more diligently and with more enthusiasm for a reward. First-class incentive trips to exotic locations, free cars or car allowances, fine jewellery and cash bonuses are offered by many companies to those who excel. And the opportunity to earn such rewards is open to everyone.
Become a better you. Direct sellers are faced with numerous comfort-zone challenges, and by overcoming those challenges they grow personally and professionally. The encouragement and training these independent business owners receive from their companies’ leaders as well as others in the field spur them to step outside their comfort zones to achieve success.

How to Change Your Life……
7 tips on getting the life you really want
Dr. Das Gupta has noticed patterns in what makes people succeed or fail, what makes them happy or sad, and what creates a life of meaning and fulfilment versus a life of frustration and despair. To transform yourself and your life, he says:
Don’t live in “No Man’s Land,” that place where you’re not really happy, but you’re not unhappy enough to do anything about it. Don’t passively accept what comes your way; drive your life toward what you really want.
See things as they are, not worse: Then see it better than it is, and then make it the way you see it.
Don’t avoid failure. Failure is necessary for real learning to occur. Overcoming obstacles gives us psychological strength—the very thing that forms character.
Don’t focus only on achievement. Extraordinary accomplishment does not guarantee joy, happiness, love and a sense of meaning. You must also focus on fulfilment.
Decide what you will no longer stand for and what you’re committed to. Clarity is power.
Take massive action. You have to be willing to do the things you don’t want to do. You have to build a momentum that consistent action produces.
Notice what’s working and what’s not working. When it is not working, change your approach. Keep changing until you finally achieve what you are committed to.

Why You Should Start Your Own Business Today
6 reasons to become an Entrepreneur
Ramesh was 52 when the bad news hit: His department was being moved offshore. Since joining the company eight years earlier, he had worked his way up to a solid position in middle management with a decent salary and great benefits. Now, he was out of a job.
Having spent his entire adult life in corporate positions, he knew he could go job hunting. But this was the fifth time he’d had a “secure” position shot out from under him, whether through downsizing, restructuring or other reorganization. With a wife and two teenagers to clothe and feed, he was no longer willing to trust his future to this game of corporate roulette. It was time to go into business for himself.
The Great Migration
Across the country and around the world, legions of people are abandoning their dependence on big business and seeking independence through their own enterprises. Every month, about 1 million Americans go through some type of job change or loss, and increasingly they are deciding to start their own businesses. In a country like USA which seems to be the dream destination of millions the situation is grim & tense.
In a recent report titled Work, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity in 21st Century America, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, “Millions of Americans are embracing entrepreneurship by running their own small businesses, through independent contracting or direct selling.” The report also cited a recent Gallup poll finding that 61 percent of Americans now say they prefer to be their own bosses.
6 Benefits of Entrepreneurship
1. Job Security. Only a generation or two ago, going into business for yourself was considered risky, and the safest route was to get a good job in a large firm. Now, working for a traditional corporation has become the risky option. Working for yourself has become the new job security. “If I’m working for someone else, I’m trading time for money, but I’m not building any equity. As an entrepreneur, I need to be the master of my own destiny”.
2. Freedom. People love the benefits of working for themselves and enjoy the freedom they gain from designing their own prosperity. You get to choose when you work, how you work and with whom you work. Best of all, you don’t have to make the agonizing choice between time for family and time for business.
3. Flexibility. It doesn't matter if you're in a big city or small town. Entrepreneurship is an equal-opportunity employer. E-mail, cheap teleconferencing and a new generation of Web tools make it possible to run a fully competitive business from a home desktop. As a home-based businessperson, you can expand your business to New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and any other small and big location in India and as well as abroad—and still make the soccer game or the T 20’s.
4. Make More Money. There is far greater opportunity to make money by building your own business than by working for someone else’s. “When you’re in business for yourself, you write your own history, you write your own success story, you write your own legacy and most important, you write your own pay cheque.. Being in business for yourself gives you the opportunity to work your heart out for something you love.”
5. A Life of Greater Impact. In the Decipher study, 86 percent of respondents said they would be more passionate about their work if they owned their own business. The No. 1 reason they gave for wanting to work for themselves: “to be more passionate about my work life.”
6. A Second Career. Millions of baby boomers of the Nation are just starting to reach retirement age, yet they’re realizing that they can’t afford to retire. What’s more, they don’t want to. Dr. Mary Furlong, author of Turning Silver into Gold, says, “Boomers are looking for ways to give back. They are taking the reins of their own futures and redefining their lives. They want work that reflects their values and identity; they want to make a difference.” Their first assignment perhaps has not given them and the room to success, financial stability, satisfaction and security in life. A recent report in TOI, Bangalore edition states that people in the age group of 70 plus are now in hunt of new job. The reason – whatever they had planned in their ages for after retirement livelihood, safety and security has totally failed and is at no par to the present market value. Their calculations in the past has totally failed and crashed due to the abnormal rate of Inflation and other effects.
Taking the Plunge:
“Leaving the rat race is not as daunting as it may seem,” “You’ll look back in later years and marvel at how easy it was and how much you gained for so little cost.”
So what does it take? First, let’s look at what it doesn’t take. You don’t need an MBA or high-powered business background, and you don’t need to be rich or to take a second mortgage on your home. Some self-owned business opportunities require expertise, such as consulting, or can take significant capital investment and possibly training, such as real estate investing and franchises; some can be started on a shoestring and prove quite lucrative, including direct selling and similar opportunities. Many of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time began with no advanced degrees and hardly any start up capital.
But make no mistake about it: What you save in cash capital you will make up for in sweat equity and passion. The major investment in most self-owned businesses is investment of one’s self in the form of time, focus and persistence. You don’t need to be a genius at negotiation or a whiz at numbers. You need a burning desire and determination filled by a strong dose of passion!

Hear “Yes” More: That’s How you WIN.
Increasing the Chance of Getting Your Way......

If you want to get your way (and who doesn’t?), use the powerful BYAF—“but you are free”—technique. In Communication Studies, Chris Carpenter explains this deceptively simple persuasive technique: the freedom of choice. Simply acknowledge that the person you’re trying to persuade isn’t boxed in and they have no obligation to say yes, saying something like, “but you are free to say no.” Your exact words don’t matter; what’s important is that you preserve all the options for the person you’re trying to sway.
In 42 separate psychological studies testing more than 22,000 individuals, people were more likely to agree if they felt they had options. For best results, deliver the BYAF message face to face; studies show that doubles the chance of a positive response. Let's reiterate: it doubles the chance of the person saying "yes" to your request. They'll probably choose the favourable response anyway, and under the impression that they had the power to make choice and control the situation, they'll be happier to make the decision you want. It's persuasion perfected.
